A recent report suggests that the New York Yankees or New York Mets may need to shell out an enormous sum to secure Juan Soto in free agency this winter, possibly approaching Shohei Ohtani’s contract range.
As the Yankees currently lead the American League, Aaron Judge’s stellar MVP campaign is a significant factor, but the team wouldn’t be a World Series contender without All-Star Juan Soto.
Soto ranks just behind Judge in key offensive categories like home runs, RBIs, total bases, and batting average. At 25 years old, Soto is having a remarkable season, which could not have come at a better time as he heads into free agency.
Despite already being a four-time All-Star and World Series champion, Soto’s youth adds to the expectation that he’ll command a massive contract, one that could reach nine figures.
His projected cost has continued to rise, with estimates earlier this year around $500 million now climbing to $520 million or more. As the Yankees, Mets, and other high-budget teams gear up for a bidding war, the final price could escalate even higher.
According to insiders, Soto’s deal could potentially approach $600 million. A rival GM noted that the Yankees are highly motivated to re-sign Soto, as they didn’t trade for him just to keep him for a year.
However, many teams, including the Mets, Dodgers, and Phillies, are expected to pursue him aggressively, driving up his value even further. Some speculate that he might even exceed the $600 million mark.
