BREAKING: Four-Star DL Anthony “AJ” Lonon Commits to Georgia – “Born in Athens, Raised by Dawgs. True Purebred!”
In what may be one of the most poetic commitments of the 2025 recruiting cycle, four-star defensive lineman Anthony “AJ” Lonon has officially pledged to the University of Georgia. The 6-foot-2, 265-pound defensive standout from Athens, Georgia — the very heart of Bulldog Country — announced his commitment on Saturday afternoon, telling @Rivals:
“Born in Athens, raised by Dawgs. True purebred!”
It’s a homegrown story of loyalty, tradition, and a fierce commitment to excellence — and it adds another powerful piece to Georgia’s already elite 2025 class under head coach Kirby Smart.
A Dawg Through and Through
AJ Lonon’s commitment wasn’t just a recruiting win — it was personal. Hailing from Athens and growing up just minutes away from Sanford Stadium, Lonon’s journey to Georgia has been a long time coming. His childhood was spent watching the Dawgs on Saturdays, idolizing players like Jordan Davis, Travon Walker, and Jalen Carter, and dreaming of one day donning the red and black himself.
“Georgia isn’t just a school to me,” Lonon told Rivals. “It’s where I’m from. It’s where I learned to play football, where my family cheered on Saturdays, and where I’ve always imagined myself making plays. I didn’t just grow up watching the Dawgs — I grew up being one.”
That emotional connection proved too strong for any other program to overcome. Despite serious interest from schools like Georgia Tech, Tennessee, and South Carolina, Lonon never strayed far from his roots.
Georgia Wins the Battle Over In-State Rival
While Lonon’s choice to stay in Athens may feel inevitable now, the battle for his commitment was fierce. Georgia Tech, in particular, put up a strong fight and hosted Lonon on multiple unofficial visits. They pitched early playing time and a chance to be a program-defining recruit in Atlanta.
However, Georgia’s sustained dominance in the SEC, its proven track record of developing NFL-ready defensive linemen, and the cultural fit of being part of something bigger at home won the day.
“Coach Tray Scott and Coach Smart never stopped recruiting me,” Lonon said. “They made it clear I was a priority, and they showed love not just to me, but to my family. That meant everything.”
Scouting Lonon: Strength, Explosiveness, and Relentless Motor
Ranked as a four-star recruit and a top-20 defensive lineman nationally by Rivals, Lonon has consistently drawn praise for his blend of power, agility, and technical skill. At 6’2” and 265 pounds, he may not have the elite height of some traditional edge rushers, but he makes up for it with a low center of gravity, elite leverage, and a quick first step that gives interior offensive linemen constant trouble.
At Clarke Central High School, Lonon dominated opposing offenses, racking up 11 sacks and 23 tackles for loss in his junior year alone. His ability to collapse the pocket from the interior, defend the run with discipline, and wreak havoc on third down has made him one of the most coveted defensive linemen in the Southeast.
“He’s got the motor and the mindset you can’t coach,” said one recruiting analyst. “He plays angry, but under control. Georgia’s defense thrives on disruptors, and AJ Lonon fits that mold perfectly.”
Another Jewel in Georgia’s 2025 Recruiting Crown
With Lonon’s commitment, Georgia now strengthens what is shaping up to be yet another top-three national recruiting class under Kirby Smart. He joins a defensive front haul that already includes fellow four-star defensive tackle Malik Hightower and edge rusher Devin Boone.
Smart, known for his relentless recruiting and defensive development, has built a dynasty on landing elite talent in the trenches — and Lonon may be the next star in that lineage.
“Guys like Jordan Davis and Jalen Carter made it cool to be a D-lineman at Georgia,” Lonon said. “Now it’s my turn to rep that tradition and add my name to it.”
The Bigger Picture: Loyalty, Legacy, and Local Heroes
In an era where high school recruits often travel across the country in search of exposure and NIL opportunities, Lonon’s commitment is a refreshing reminder of what still matters in college football — homegrown pride and loyalty.
He now joins a select group of Georgia-born players who have stayed home to chase championships, represent their communities, and build legacies that go beyond the field.
“This isn’t just about football,” Lonon said. “It’s about where I’m from, who I am, and where I’m going.”
And where he’s going — quite literally — is just across town. From playing high school ball in Athens to suiting up in Sanford Stadium in front of 90,000 fans, Lonon’s story is a hometown dream come true.
What’s Next?
Lonon plans to enroll early in January 2025 and begin participating in spring ball. With Georgia’s depth on the defensive line, he’ll have time to develop under one of the best coaching staffs in the country, but don’t be surprised if he cracks the rotation sooner rather than later.
For now, though, Bulldog Nation is celebrating a win that hits close to home — and AJ Lonon is ready to get to work.
“Dawg born. Dawg bred. Dawg for life.”
And Georgia just got better because of it.
