Marc-Andre ter Stegen, the goalkeeper for Barcelona, was taken off the field on a stretcher during the first half of Sunday’s La Liga match against Villarreal due to a seemingly significant knee injury.
Towards the end of the first period, the Germany international claimed a simple cross, but he fell awkwardly and quickly indicated that he needed treatment.
The goalie had to be stretchered off the pitch because the players surrounding him were visibly worried. Barcelona was now bracing themselves for the worst.
The head coach of the Catalan team, Hansi Flick, will be questioned about the event during the La Liga match. Barcelona is currently leading 3-1 midway through the second half.
Ter Stegen seemed to have a significant knee injury while playing Villarreal.
Ter Steven was replaced by Inaki Pena, who may now need to spend a significant amount of time on the sidelines.
Because of how the incident happened, there are worries that he may have injured his ACL, necessitating surgery and keeping him out of the game for the rest of the season.
Both Gavi and Marc Bernal have recently suffered serious knee injuries for Barcelona; the former is still sidelined due to an ACL injury he got late last year while playing for Spain on the international stage.
However, Bernal suffered an ACL injury earlier in the season, and it is unlikely that the 17-year-old will be ready to play until the following year.
During his post-match press conference, Flick will surely be questioned about the circumstances; however, a thorough investigation is necessary before a club statement is released.
Because of this, it won’t be evident how much damage has been done until the beginning of next week, but the first signs point to a lengthy recuperation process for Barcelona’s top player.
