Chelsea fans will be relieved by Romano’s latest update on their new wonderkid.

Fabrizio Romano’s Daily Briefings for CaughtOffside are understandably quiet right now, given the lull between the summer and winter transfer windows. However, the Italian insider is still keeping an eye on developments, and today he provided an update on Josh Acheampong.

The young defender is highly regarded, with many fans eager to see him get more playing time in the first team. While he has made a few brief appearances off the bench, supporters are clamoring for him to take on a larger role.

One potential solution for Josh Acheampong is a loan move, which seems likely for next summer—or possibly even in January if he advocates for it. However, a permanent departure is not an option Chelsea can entertain. This week, rumors surfaced about Newcastle being interested in signing him, following their acquisitions of Tino Livramento and Lewis Hall.

Fortunately for Chelsea fans, Romano has dismissed those rumors:

“There’s no ‘situation’ with Josh Acheampong,” he said. “He’s a Chelsea player, considered part of the project and a key talent. He’s highly valued by Enzo Maresca and his staff. There are no talks with Newcastle or any other club—no movements are happening. Acheampong is one of the players Chelsea trusts.

Josh Acheampong trains for Chelsea in preseason.

We’re delighted to hear it – but even if these rumours are false, it’s a reminder that we need to find a pathway for Acheampong before something similar does actually happen. We’ve seen so many players keen to stay end up leaving because they simply couldn’t see their way into the team. With Acheampong we still have time – but giving him opportunities this season will be important.
