Arnold Must Learn to Control His Hands: A Rookie’s Growing Pains

Terrion Arnold, the rookie cornerback for the Detroit Lions, is experiencing typical challenges that many NFL newcomers face.

The No. 24 overall pick has been flagged four times in his first two games.

When asked about the learning curve for young players adapting to zone coverage, Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn shared his thoughts on what Arnold needs to work on.

“As a defensive back, it just takes time,” Glenn said. “Whether it’s zone or man, the rules are different. This is an offensive league, and defensive players are scrutinized differently.

If you put your hands on a player past a certain point down the field, there’s a good chance the ref will call it. He has to learn that.”

Despite the challenges, Glenn expressed full confidence in Arnold’s potential, stating, “He’s going to be a damn good player for us.”

Through two games, Arnold has allowed 11 receptions on 13 targets, giving up 129 yards and a touchdown, with a passer rating allowed of 133.7. Against the Buccaneers, he was involved in a play where wide receiver Chris Godwin got open for a 41-yard touchdown, helping his team take a 13-6 lead.

Improving communication with fellow defensive backs and linebackers is key to refining his zone coverage skills.

Arnold returned to practice on Friday after missing time due to illness and is listed as questionable for the upcoming game against the Arizona Cardinals.
