Chelsea news as Enzo Maresca anticipates rotating against Barrow in the third round of the Carabao Cup, leaving key players out.
Tuesday night marks the beginning of Enzo Maresca’s quest for what may be his first trophy as Chelsea manager. Maresca has advanced to the Carabao Cup final in two of the previous three seasons. Now that the Blues are settling down under the Italian, they may cautiously aim for a cup run.
The visit of League Two Barrow is a low-key beginning to Chelsea’s League Cup campaign, even though Maresca himself isn’t looking that far ahead – “We need to go game by game and to see where we arrive and then fight for that” With a big roster and guys that are still lacking playing time, it’s an opportunity to switch things up and try new things.
“Yeah, it could be the chance also to give them some minutes; in the same way we have done in the Conference League, we try to share minutes with them,” he stated. “Hopefully it can be a good chance for them to hopefully show some good moments themselves, to continue to get minutes.”
Cole Palmer was conspicuously absent from Chelsea’s Conference League group phase roster, suggesting that he could be allowed to recuperate here as well. Tyrique George, who also partially worked under Maresca at Cobham this year, would be among others eager to take advantage of his absence.
