Cricket South Africa Confirms Future Bilateral Matches with Afghanistan
Cricket South Africa (CSA) has reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining bilateral fixtures with Afghanistan, despite calls to boycott the country due to the Taliban government’s treatment of women. On Thursday, CSA released a statement addressing the controversy and clarifying its position.
This decision comes amid criticism from various organizations, including Lawyers for Human Rights, which argued that engaging with Afghanistan’s men’s cricket team could be seen as an implicit endorsement of the Taliban regime. However, CSA has opted for a more nuanced approach.
In its statement, CSA emphasized its strong belief in gender equity and the recognition of women’s cricket, while making it clear that it does not support penalizing Afghan cricket players for the actions of their government.
CSA is committed to ensuring that advocacy for one gender does not come at the expense of another. We believe there is no justification for subjecting Afghan cricket players—both male and female—to secondary persecution due to the actions of the Taliban. We will continue to engage with member countries within the formal structures of the International Cricket Council (ICC) to address this issue,” the statement read.
