Former Cowboys RB Finds New Opportunity with Cleveland Browns
Former Dallas Cowboys running back Royce Freeman is set to join the Cleveland Browns’ practice squad.
For Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, this comes on the heels of a frustrating loss, as his team struggles with one of the lowest rushing averages in the NFL, under 100 yards per game. He remains upset that the one running back he showed interest in, Dalvin Cook, signed elsewhere. Jones seems to believe Cook is the solution to the Cowboys’ running game issues, even as he denies there are any problems at all. Meanwhile, another contender has secured the best available free-agent running back.
With Freeman now off the table, it highlights ongoing concerns about the Cowboys’ backfield. Freeman had a strong showing during the offseason and appeared to be a contender for the starting role, but the team ultimately released him in favor of Cook.
Cook’s performance last season—averaging just 3.2 yards per carry on 67 attempts—and his lack of preseason play raises questions about why he was prioritized over Freeman.
Jones’s approach resembles that of a fantasy football player who clings to past star players, ignoring their decline. It’s puzzling what Cook demonstrated that Freeman did not. Given that Freeman accepted a practice squad role in Cleveland, it’s disappointing that Dallas didn’t retain him.
Cowboys fans now face a dilemma: either trust that Rico Dowdle and Ezekiel Elliott will perform well, or hope that Cook can still be a Pro Bowler despite being overlooked by 31 other teams this offseason. Neither scenario offers much reassurance moving forward.
