Tokyo Olympic gold swimmer medallist Yui Ohashi retires

Japanese swimmer Yui Ohashi, who won two gold medals at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, has retired from competitive swimming after her final race on Saturday.

The 28-year-old Olympic champion earned a silver medal in the 200m Individual Medley final at the 78th National Sports Festival in Saga, Japan, with a time of 2:12.03. Shiho Matsumoto, her Paris Olympic teammate, claimed victory with a time of 2:10.51.

Ohashi’s illustrious career includes winning gold in both the 200m and 400m Individual Medley at the postponed Tokyo 2020 Games, making her the first Japanese female swimmer to secure multiple gold medals at a single Olympics.

Despite her Tokyo success, she qualified only for the 200m Individual Medley at the Paris 2024 Olympics but did not make it to the final, finishing 12th in the semifinals.

Ohashi reflected on her career, saying, “I enjoyed it deeply, and it was a fitting final race. I had a dream career with Olympic golds. Japanese swimming is facing challenges, and I hope to help in its recovery.”
